About OTTOsonics
OTTOsonics is a collective of sounds-artists, developers, and sound engineers with an initiative to make immersive audio formats accessible to sounds and performance artists, as well as cultural and educational institutions, and to facilitate their use in the arts and culture.
Last year we had the opportunity to curate concerts, residencies and a festival at Alter Bauhof in Ottensheim. Our 2022 Residencies’ aim was to exchange technical and creative methods from production to implementation, and to share artistic and technological know-how across the field of acoustic and electronic music. We invited 5 artists for 4 programs: Mariam Gviniashvili, Ida Hiršenfelder, Robert Schwarz & Jung An Tagen, Amélie Nilles. The participants experimented, produced and mixed their pieces during the one-week residency with OTTOsonics speaker system, which is a modular rig of 4-inch custom-made loudspeakers plus subwoofers which can be fully adapted to diverse spatialization layouts in three dimensions. The system is currently for 5th order ambisonics:
36-channel dome, single OTTOsonics speakers (10 at -30°, 10 at 0°, 10 at 30°, 5 at 60°, 1 at 90°, 6m diameter, 3 studio subwoofers)
15-channel ring utilizing the whole space (10x12m), mini-line arrays with 6 OTTOsonics speakers and 4x 18′′subs.
16-channel ceiling speakers (4 x 4 grid)
Stereo PA
Prospectus
OTTOsonics is pleased to invite all musicians and sound artists, national and international, to apply for an open call for an immersive sound residency for the Summer of 2023 in Ottensheim, Austria.
OTTOsonics residency 2023 is a two-week program, where participants realize an interactive sound installation utilizing OTTOsonics ambisonic speaker layout or using OTTOsonics custom-made speaker system and reconstruct them in their audio sculpture setting. In addition, OTTOsonics can provide the artist with a Symmetric Polyhedron sculpture, which is equipped with OTTOsonics custom-made speakers.
In the framework of this edition, we are looking for musicians and sound artists with innovative ideas, who enjoy experimenting in a multichannel environment, are interested in building instruments or devices or are familiar with programming, and have a knowledge in working with immersive sound systems.
Both participants are invited to present their creations at the OTTOsonics Festival in September.
For archival purposes, participants are asked to provide written or visual documentation of their process, such as a short paper, article, or photos and videos.
Artists have full copyright privileges over their creation. In agreement with the artist, Ottosonics will pursue an open access policy and will present the installation continuously. With the consent of the artist, OTTOsonics will include the creations from residency programs for future marketing and fundraising purposes.
